Koa (Acacia koa), Hawai’i, USA
Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, the koa is a large, fast-growing tree and easily germinates in the proper wet conditions; however, like most sought-after timber species, it has suffered from overlogging. Once used by Hawaiians as outrigger canoe trees, there are few left that are large enough and straight enough for this purpose.
