Koala and baby (Phascolarctos cineraeus)
Kangaroo Island, South Australia
On Australia’s Kangaroo Island, 14 meters above the ground, a koala cradles its baby on a limb of a giant eucalyptus tree. To get this shot and its unusual perspective, I climbed the tree, keeping myself concealed behind the trunk. The koalas were sleeping so soundly on this chilly morning that I was able to approach to within half a meter. I selected a 17-35mm wide-angle lens for two reasons. First, it is easy to hand hold while balancing on a branch. Second, I wanted to capture a “sense of place” only a wide-angle lens can.
